Fencing Fall 2011

It’s time to start thinking about fencing for this fall.

Parents and fencers, please start registering for fencing. New fencers should register for classes at the Daniel Island School, which is run by City of Charleston Recreation. Older fencers with experience should register for classes at The Darby Building in the Old Village, which is run by Mt. Pleasant Recreation.

If you’re not sure which category you fall into, then please contact Coach Thad Schmenk at ThadSensei@hotmail.com. Coach Thad recently started a new job as a principal of a high school. He has a lot of things going on. It may take him a few days to respond to inquiries.

Space is limited.

3 East of the Cooper Fencers Qualify for the Junior Olympics

Congratulations are in order for

  • Whitney Martin
  • Leotie Hakkila
  • Emily Fairchild

for qualifying for the Fencing Junior Olympics in Dallas in February 2011.

These young women from East of the Cooper Fencing traveled to a well-run qualifying tournament at Foothills Fencing in Peidmont, SC, a section of Greenville.

On Saturday, all 3 qualified for the Cadet (U17) Epee JOs when another competitor no showed!  Leotie Hakkila also qualify for the Junior (U20) Epee JOs by placing 2nd in the tournament.

On Sunday, all 3 returned to compete in U20 and U17 Foil qualifiers.  Leotie Hakkila placed 2nd in the U20 division and 3rd in the U17 division to secure two more slots at the JOs.  We believe that Emily Fairchild and Whitney Martin will also qualify in the U17 division, pending a ruling from USFA.

Everyone from East of the Cooper Fencing came away impressed with the Foothills Fencing facilities, fencers, coaches and supporters.  They were very gracious.  We look forward to returning for future events and hosting them at tournaments in Charleston in the future.

Congratulations to all the other fencers from SC who qualified for the Junior Olympics.
